THE Salvation Army has said it had no choice but to retrench about 100 employment services staff, including 10 in the Hunter, because it was losing money.
Major John Simmonds, chief executive officer of The Salvation Army Employment Plus, apologised that the cuts were close to Christmas but said all who lost jobs would be paid "more than their full entitlements".Former staff who contacted The Herald yesterday said they were shocked by the retrenchments, which began on Thursday. "Employees . . . were given no notice and told to leave immediately," a former staff member said."One employee was shocked when she lost her job just two weeks after being told by her local manager that their jobs were safe.""Unemployment has been historically low for a long time which was wonderful for job-seekers but made our operating conditions difficult," Major Simmonds, who is based in Melbourne, said."Now there's a downturn in job vacancies caused by the global financial uncertainty."
