Let's get this straight: business can't find enough workers in Australia, but there are hundreds of thousands of people who would start work next month if the system supported it ("Keen to work, a million lost in the system", Herald, March 12-13). Australia has the highest minimum wage in the OECD, but is pretty much the highest taxer of low-income earners in the OECD. Business claims it is the cost of hiring that holds back employment. Oh joy, to see how much expertise in front-line policing is contained among Sydney's politicians, columnists and radio announcers.
